Christmas Presence

For those of us in ministry, the Advent season can feel like a high-stakes performance. Each year, we face the pressure to make the Christmas story feel new and engaging for our congregations. Perhaps you’re feeling that pressure now as you perfect the Christmas Eve service, checking every detail twice to ensure it’s unforgettable. But in all our effort to craft something extraordinary, could we be overlooking the most significant gift of all?
Not the lights, music, or even the message itself, but Presence. God’s presence with us—Immanuel. And our presence with one another. This is the heartbeat of the Christmas story, the good news found in Luke 2: God’s promised presence among us in the person of Jesus Christ.
And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” – Luke 2:8-12 NIV
The Promise of God’s Presence
The angels’ announcement to the shepherds wasn’t just news of a birth—it was the fulfillment of a promise. For centuries, the people of Israel had waited for the Messiah, the one who would save and restore. The angel’s words, “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord,” declared that God’s promise of presence had finally been realized. Jesus’ birth wasn’t just a historical event; it was heaven breaking into earth to dwell among us.
The Power of His Presence
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. – John 1:14 NIV
God’s presence in the person of Jesus wasn’t distant or abstract—it was personal, tangible, and life-changing. Jesus entered the messiness of human life, bringing hope to the hopeless, peace to the restless, and light to those walking in darkness. His presence didn’t just comfort; it transformed. The blind saw, the broken were healed, and the weary found rest.
Even now, His presence meets us where we are—in our doubts, fears, and uncertainties—offering the same hope, peace, and light. Imagine life without Him: no anchor in the storms, no light to guide us, no joy in the journey. But because He came near, everything changes. What difference has His presence made in your life? And how can you let that light shine through you this Christmas?
Experience His Presence
“And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” – Matthew 28:20b NIV
The presence of Jesus wasn’t limited to His earthly ministry. He didn’t come just to change lives in the past—He came to remain with us, even now. Through the Holy Spirit, His presence continues to transform lives, offering comfort, guidance, and joy to all who seek Him.
The promise of Jesus' presence wasn’t just for His disciples in the first century—it’s for you and me today. After His resurrection, Jesus assured His followers that His presence would never leave them, and this promise continues to resonate through every generation.
Through the Holy Spirit, we are never alone. His presence walks with us in our struggles, celebrates with us in our victories, and sustains us in the mundane moments of life. When we experience His presence, we find a comfort that steadies us, a guidance that leads us, and a joy that fills us, even in the hardest seasons.
Jesus’ presence isn’t a distant memory; it’s a daily reality. Through the Holy Spirit, He is with us—guiding, comforting, and filling our hearts with joy. This Christmas, may you not just remember His presence but truly experience it. Take time to seek Him in prayer, worship, and His Word. In moments of silence and stillness, you will feel His nearness. Whether it’s in the quiet of a candlelit room, the laughter of loved ones, or the beauty of a snowy night, His presence is tangible and life-giving.
Practicing Presence This Christmas
Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. – Colossians 3:12-14 NIV
As we celebrate the gift of God’s presence with us, we’re also called to be fully present with one another. Paul’s words in Colossians remind us to clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. These virtues reflect the presence of Christ in us and help us embody His love in our relationships.
This Christmas, give the priceless gift of your presence. Put down the distractions—turn off the phone, pause the to-do list—and lean into meaningful moments. Engage deeply in conversations. Show love in tangible ways. Whether it’s with family, your church community, or even strangers, your presence is a reflection of His presence in you.
My Gift to You
This Christmas, don’t let the busyness steal the beauty of God’s presence or the joy of being present with others. Take time to pause, reflect, and celebrate the greatest gift—Immanuel, God with us. Let His presence fill your heart and overflow into every interaction, every moment, every relationship.
May your Christmas be marked not by the perfection of your plans, but by the richness of His presence. From my home to yours, Merry Christmas!
