When we think about the biggest Sundays on the church calendar, Christmas and Easter quickly come to mind. But there's another Sunday that often holds a special place in the life of the church: Mother’s Day.

In many congregations, Mother’s Day is one of the highest-attended Sundays of the year outside of the traditional holy days. Families gather to celebrate the incredible women who have shaped our lives, prayed for us, encouraged us, and nurtured us in faith and love. It’s a perfect opportunity for the church not only to honor mothers but to point people to the ultimate love and hope found in Jesus Christ.

Rather than simply handing out a carnation and moving on, why not take the opportunity to be intentional, creative, and deeply meaningful in how you celebrate the moms in your church family this year?

Here are 5 creative ways your church can make Mother's Day truly special:

1. Create a "Thank You, Mom" Wall

Set up a beautiful display wall in your church lobby or fellowship area where people can write short notes thanking their moms, spiritual mothers, grandmothers, or mentor figures. Provide colorful sticky notes, pens, and markers. After the service, invite everyone to read the notes — it will be a heartwarming and powerful reminder of the generational impact of love and faith.

2. Host a "Muffins with Moms" Reception

Instead of just recognizing moms during worship, host a simple, elegant breakfast reception before or after the service. Serve muffins, coffee, juice, and fruit, and encourage families to sit together and enjoy a relaxed time of connection. Consider having kids or youth group volunteers serve the moms as a way of honoring them!

3. Share a Special Video Tribute

Ahead of Mother’s Day, invite members of the congregation to submit short video clips (30-60 seconds) thanking their moms or sharing a favorite memory.

Compile the clips into a short tribute video to show during the service. It’s a beautiful way to let multiple voices celebrate the role of mothers while creating a few meaningful, teary-eyed moments that everyone will remember.

4. Recognize All Women, Not Just Mothers

Mother’s Day can be a painful day for those who have lost mothers, struggled with infertility, or are still waiting for certain prayers to be answered.

Be sensitive and broaden your celebration to honor all women — biological mothers, adoptive mothers, spiritual mothers, mentors, aunts, grandmothers, and caregivers.

Consider wording like, "Today, we honor every woman who nurtures, loves, leads, and makes a difference in the lives of others."This approach widens the circle and ensures that every woman feels seen and valued.

5. Gift a Meaningful Devotional, Prayer Card or unusual Fun Gift

Instead of flowers or candy, consider giving each woman a small but meaningful gift — like a short devotional book, a beautiful prayer card, or a scripture print.

You could personalize it with a note saying, "Thank you for living out God’s love in action."Gifts that encourage women spiritually can have a lasting impact, far beyond the day itself.

At one church I served my wife came up with unusual ways to recognize the women in the church. Instead of giving a bouquet of flowers to the oldest, youngest, most kids at church, etc., she devised categories like who recently fixed a boo boo, who still has laundry in the dryer, who made pancakes for breakfast. For gifts they received a first aid kit, laundry detergent and dryer sheets, pancake mix and a spatula, etc.

Be creative and do something that will highlight moms or surrogate moms that are normally overlooked.

Mother’s Day Is a Ministry Opportunity

Mother’s Day isn’t just a cultural celebration — it's a chance to minister to hearts, build family memories, and point people to Jesus.

When we honor the faithful, sacrificial love of mothers, we reflect the heart of God Himself — a God who is nurturing, strong, compassionate, and unrelenting in His love for His children.

This Mother’s Day, let's do more than just acknowledge moms. Let’s celebrate them well, love them deeply, and encourage them spiritually.

Because next to Christmas and Easter, it may be one of the greatest opportunities we have to show the love of Christ to families in our community.

Share the Celebration!

We would love to see how your church celebrates the amazing women in your community this Mother’s Day!

After your service or event, share your favorite photos, memories, or special moments on social media — and don't forget to tag us so we can celebrate with you.

Use the hashtag #HonoringMomsAtChurch and inspire others with creative ideas, joyful gatherings, and heartfelt ministry in action.

Let's show the world how the love of Christ shines brightly through the women who make such a difference in our lives!
