Discovering Your One Excellent Mission
This worksheet is designed to help your church leadership team uncover and clarify your unique
missional identity. By reflecting on your strengths, your community’s needs, and the biblical mandate,
you'll begin to discover the focus God is calling your church to embrace.
1. Mission Clarity Circle Exercise
Draw three overlapping circles and label them:
• Our Strengths: What does our church do well? What gifts, talents, and passions do we already
have?
• Community Needs: What are the pressing needs, struggles, or gaps in our neighborhood or town?
• Gospel Mandate: What has Christ clearly called all churches to do? (e.g., make disciples, serve
the poor, share the Gospel)
2. Reflection Questions
Discuss these questions as a team:
• Who are we? What is our story, our passion, and our calling?
• Who is our neighbor? What is going on in our community that God is inviting us to engage?
• What is God calling us to do now, in this season?
3. Draft Your Mission Focus Statement
Based on your discussion and insights from the circles, write a one-sentence statement that expresses
your church’s focused mission. Example: 'We exist to serve and build relationships with single-parent
families in our community through love, support, and discipleship.'
4. Next Steps
Once you've identified your One Excellent Mission:
• Align all church ministries and events around this mission.
• Communicate it clearly and consistently to the congregation.
• Celebrate stories and wins that reflect your mission focus.
You don’t have to do everything—just the right thing, faithfully.
