The Heart of a Small Town Pastor: Why This Story Matters Now

Foundational Scripture:“Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.” — The Bible, 1 Peter 5:2–3 (NKJV)

There are moments in ministry when you realize that what you’re doing matters more than you can see.

Not because of the size of the crowd. Not because of the budget or the building. But because of the quiet, steady work of shepherding people over time.

That’s the heartbeat behind my new book, The Heart of a Small Town Pastor, releasing this coming week.

And I believe its message couldn’t come at a better time.

Why This Book Had to Be Written

After more than four decades in ministry, most of it in smaller congregations, I’ve seen both the beauty and the burden of pastoral leadership in places that often feel overlooked.

Small town ministry is different.

It’s:

  • Sitting at kitchen tables, not just preaching from pulpits

  • Walking with people through generations of life

  • Leading without the spotlight—but with deep responsibility

And yet, so many pastors in these settings feel:

  • Isolated

  • Undervalued

  • Unsure if what they’re doing is making a difference

This book was born out of those realities.

Not as a manual. Not as a list of strategies.

But as a story.

A Story That Mentors the Soul

The Heart of a Small Town Pastor follows a young pastor learning the rhythms of ministry under the guidance of a seasoned mentor.

Through their journey, readers encounter:

  • The slow work of building trust

  • The tension of leadership decisions

  • The emotional weight of pastoral care

  • The quiet victories that never make headlines

It’s fiction—but it’s also deeply real.

Because behind every scene is lived experience.

If you’ve ever wished for someone to walk alongside you and say, “Here’s what matters most,” this story was written with you in mind.

Why This Message Matters Right Now

We are living in a time when many churches—especially smaller ones—are asking hard questions:

  • Are we still making a difference?

  • How do we move forward after the challenges of recent years?

  • What does faithful ministry really look like today?

The answer isn’t found in doing more.

It’s found in returning to the heart of the calling.

This book is a reminder that:

  • Faithfulness still matters

  • Presence still matters

  • Relationships still matter

And perhaps most importantly…

You don’t have to be in a big place to do significant Kingdom work.

Who This Book Is For

This book is for:

  • Pastors serving in small towns or smaller churches

  • Church leaders who feel the weight of ministry

  • New pastors looking for wisdom and direction

  • Seasoned leaders who need encouragement to keep going

It’s also for anyone who wants to better understand the life behind the calling.

A Personal Note

This book is deeply personal to me.

It reflects not only my journey but the countless pastors I’ve walked alongside over the years—faithful men and women who show up week after week, loving their people and serving their communities.

My hope is simple:

That this story will encourage you.Strengthen you.And remind you that your work matters more than you know.
