The Power of Pastoral Mentoring and Accountability

"So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it." – 1 Corinthians 10:12-13 (NIV)

For more than a decade, I met monthly with a group of pastors to study, encourage, share, and even vent—discussing things that only pastors truly understand. Alongside this, I have been part of mentoring triads, fostering discipleship relationships that helped me grow both personally and in my ministry. These experiences reinforced the profound impact of having trusted companions on the journey of faith and leadership.

Should Pastors and Christian Leaders Engage in Mentoring and Coaching?

Absolutely. Ministry can be isolating, and without healthy relationships, pastors can struggle with discouragement, burnout, and even moral failure. I tend to read widely about the challenges that face pastors and Christian leaders. And it sometimes seems that each week there’s another story of a pastor that has either quit or was pushed out by a scandal. Scripture reminds us that no one is beyond temptation, and wise leaders recognize their need for accountability. Mentoring and coaching provide a structured way to stay spiritually sharp, emotionally healthy, and mission-focused. Sometimes we just need someone to listen to the latest challenge of leading a congregation. Pastors should never lead in a vacuum. We need others to help us navigate the wilderness that is ministry.

A mentoring relationship offers more than just professional advice—it fosters personal growth, wisdom, and spiritual renewal. Proverbs 27:17 tells us, "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another." We are not meant to do this work alone.

What Are the Benefits of Mentoring Relationships?

  1. Encouragement and Strength – If you’ve ever felt like you’ve hit the wall or run out of gas you know that ministry is demanding, and encouragement from trusted peers can keep us moving forward with renewed passion. It helps us fill the tank back up.

  2. Accountability and Integrity – A mentor or peer group helps safeguard against isolation and poor decision-making by providing honest feedback and loving correction.

  3. Wisdom and Growth – Learning from those who have gone before us helps us avoid pitfalls and build on best practices.

  4. Renewed Vision and Focus – Regular mentorship can help keep the mission of disciple-making front and center.

  5. A Safe Space to Share – Pastors often struggle to find safe spaces where they can be transparent about their challenges and doubts. A mentoring group or relationship provides that refuge.

How to Begin or Join a Mentoring Relationship

  1. Seek Out a Mentor or Group – If you don’t already have someone guiding you, pray for God to lead you to a seasoned pastor or leader willing to invest in you.

  2. Start a Peer Group – Form a small group with fellow pastors or Christian leaders where you can share, encourage, and hold each other accountable.

  3. Join a Coaching Relationship – If you desire structured support, consider a coaching relationship that provides both guidance and accountability.

  4. Be Open and Committed – Whether you are the mentor or the mentee, show up with authenticity and a willingness to learn.

Looking for a Coaching Connection?

I am passionate about mentoring and coaching fellow pastors and Christian leaders. Each month, I donate up to 20 hours of my time in one-hour coaching blocks to encourage and equip leaders like you. If you’d like to explore a healthy coaching connection, fill out my interest form here.

Ministry was never meant to be a solo journey. Surround yourself with people who will walk alongside you, encourage you, and hold you accountable. That’s how we stay strong, faithful, and effective in our calling.
